Which San Jose run clubs are good for beginners?
A beginner-friendly run club is one that says "all paces" or "no one gets left behind" and runs a route short enough to walk if you need to. In San Jose, the store runs (Sports Basement Almaden and Campbell, lululemon Santana Row) and the social runs (Goodtime Bar, South Bay Run Club, Bay Area Runners) are the easiest first runs. Each listing above is marked "Beginner-friendly" based on the club's own page.
What to do before your first group run
- Join the club on Strava or Meetup, or follow it on Instagram, so you see that week's start point.
- Sign any waiver ahead of time. Goodtime Bar Run Club asks for one before your first run.
- Arrive 10 minutes early and tell the organizer it's your first time. They will usually pair you with someone at your pace.
- Stay for the coffee or drink afterward. That's where the talking happens.
Common questions
Are San Jose run clubs free?
Yes. All 14 run clubs on this page were free to join when we checked on October 10 and 11, 2026. Some start or finish at a bar or coffee shop, where you pay for anything you order.
What is the biggest run club in Downtown San Jose?
Goodtime Bar Run Club is the best-known downtown run. It meets every Monday at 6 PM at Goodtime Bar in Fountain Alley and had 1,559 members on its Strava club page on Oct 10, 2026. Strava counts sign-ups, not weekly turnout.
Can I join a run club if I'm slow?
Yes. Look for "all paces" or "every pace welcome" on the club's page. Store runs and social runs usually offer a shorter route, and many runners walk part of it.
Is there a women's run club in San Jose?
The Sole Sisters Club is a free women's running group in San Jose. It had no upcoming run posted at our last check, so look at its page for the next date.
Do I have to drink at a bar run club?
No. Bar-hosted runs end with a social hangout, but drinking is optional. Goodtime Bar's FAQ lists non-alcoholic options, and the run itself is open to everyone.
About the editor. SanJoseClubs is run by Greg de Vries, a longtime South Bay local. Greg owns Living Well Event Center in Los Gatos, is Managing Director at BTB Capital, and has taught meditation and mindfulness for 25 years. He started SanJoseClubs to make it easier for people to find a group and actually show up. Every listing is checked against the group's own page, and groups never pay to be listed. Reach him at
[email protected]. Listings are checked against each group's own public page (Meetup, Strava, groups.io, library calendars, or the club website). A group is listed only if we saw an upcoming event or dated activity within about the last 90 days.
