Find a group that meets this week, and keep going back.

Make friends in San Jose › New to San Jose

By Greg de Vries · Published October 11, 2026 · Updated October 11, 2026 · Listings re-checked weekly; next full review January 2027

If you're new to San Jose, join one weekly group in your first two weeks and add one monthly group after that. Easy starting points: Goodtime Bar Run Club on Monday evenings Downtown, the Wednesday game night at Guildhouse, a library book club near home, or a Volo Sports league you join solo. Each listing says how to show up.

How do I meet people in my first month in San Jose?

The plan that works for most newcomers is simple: one weekly group, one monthly group, and go back to both. Seeing the same faces three or four times is what turns strangers into friends.

  1. Week 1: Go to one weekly drop-in group with no sign-up hurdle, such as a run club, an open board game night, or a pickup game.
  2. Week 2: Go back to the same group, and add one monthly group near where you live, like a library book club or a writing group.
  3. Week 3: Sign up for something with a start date, such as a Volo league as a free agent, so you have a standing reason to show up.
  4. Week 4: Suggest coffee or a meal to one or two people you keep seeing. Most groups have a chat (Meetup, Strava, Discord or Instagram) where that's normal.

Which San Jose groups are easiest to join when you're new?

These groups are open to new members, OK to attend alone, and meet often enough that you can go again next week. All were confirmed active in our October 10 and 11, 2026 check.

Common questions

Is it hard to make friends in San Jose?

Many newcomers say so. Threads like "Moving to San Jose, where do people actually make friends here?" come up regularly on r/SanJose. The fix most locals suggest is the same: pick a recurring activity and keep going back.

Where do people in their 20s and 30s meet people in San Jose?

Run clubs Downtown and at Santana Row, open game nights at Guildhouse, Volo Sports leagues, and age-focused Meetup groups such as Make Friends San Jose (20s to 40s) and MV to SJ Downtowners (20s to 40s).

What should I join first after moving to San Jose?

Start with one free weekly group that doesn't require sign-up, such as Goodtime Bar Run Club on Mondays or the Wednesday board game group at Guildhouse. Add a monthly group near your home once you're settled.

Are there groups for older adults who are new to San Jose?

Yes. 55+ South Bay Active Group runs several events a month, and San Jose Singles 60s and Beyond meets for weekly Friday dinners. Library programs such as Games On for Older Adults at Berryessa are free.
